This course is for those who have a basic understanding of avalanche science and are comfortable skiing on varied snow conditions. The goal of the course is to help you make safer decisions in layered winter snow. As preparation, we recommend reviewing the avalanche school on Varsom and the book Skikompis by Christer Lundberg Nes (2022).

The course is held outdoors with a practical approach to avalanche science. We adapt the course to the weather, snow conditions, and participants' needs, making the program flexible. Nevertheless, all main points will be covered over the three course days. The course includes short theoretical sessions combined with practical exercises. To get the most out of the course, it is important that participants are active and ask questions throughout.

Topics covered during the course

Terrain:

Understanding the role of terrain in avalanches
Different terrain classes and their impact on travel
Understanding how route and track choices can reduce consequences

Companion Rescue:

Performing and explaining group checks before tours
Conducting companion searches for avalanche victims
Excavating an avalanche victim
Carrying out emergency notifications
Performing basic first aid

Avalanche Hazard:

Systematic snowpack examination
Performing stability tests and understanding the information they provide
Recognizing warning signs and their implications
Familiarity with various avalanche problems and their relevance to route choice
Basic understanding of the role of weather

Snow and Avalanches:

Different types of avalanches
Understanding and applying key avalanche-related terms
Understanding different types of snow and their relevance to avalanches
Comprehending weak layers, their properties, and distribution
Various processes within the snowpack

Equipment:

Preparing for and conducting winter mountain tours and assessing appropriate equipment

Group Dynamics:

Importance of clarifying motivations for the tour
